Volatility regime (VIX)
WheelTrading.io knows five volatility regimes anchored to VIX levels. They steer the strategy automatically more defensively or aggressively.
The five buckets
| Regime | VIX range | Min ATR distance | SP-L1 / SP-L2 / CC |
|---|---|---|---|
| sehr_ruhig | < 12 | 1.0 | 1 / 2 / 4 |
| ruhig | 12 – 15 | 1.0 | 2 / 3 / 3 |
| normal | 15 – 20 | 1.5 | 3 / 3 / 2 |
| erhoeht | 20 – 30 | 2.0 | 4 / 3 / 2 |
| extrem | >= 30 | 2.5 | 4 / 2 / 1 |
- Min ATR distance is the minimum strike-to-spot distance in ATR.
As VIX rises we pick more conservative strikes.
- SP-L1 / SP-L2 / CC are the maximum positions per type (Short Put
Level 1, Short Put Level 2, Covered Call).
Automation
The engine pulls the current VIX and returns the active regime:
GET /api/strategy/accounts/{account_id}/regime?vix=22.5Response:
{
"vix": 22.5,
"regime": {
"label": "erhoeht",
"min_atr": 2.0,
"max_l1": 4,
"max_l2": 3,
"max_cc": 2,
"risk_score_low_max": 0.6,
"risk_score_medium_max": 1.2
}
}Risk thresholds
We compute a risk score, which yields three classes:
- score < 0.6 → Low
- score < 1.2 → Medium
- score >= 1.2 → High
Customising
With Wheel Premium you can edit all five regimes (boundaries, ATR thresholds, position caps). Without overrides the system defaults above apply.
