Configure API keys
WheelTrading uses three external data providers so the app can display news, fundamentals and optional AI outlooks. You bring your own personal API key for each service - any costs (where applicable) therefore accrue directly with the provider on your own account, not through us.
All keys are stored encrypted (Fernet / AES) in our database. They only ever show up masked on the settings page (e.g. abcd***wxyz) and can be deleted individually.
IBKR Flex token + query IDs? Those live in the same settings area technically, but the setup takes several steps in the IBKR Client Portal (generate token, create queries with the right sections, copy query IDs). Full walkthrough with click paths and field list: Set up the IBKR Flex import.

Finnhub (required)
What for: news feeds per symbol, earnings dates and metadata (sector, market cap and so on). Without a Finnhub key, news blocks are empty and the options earnings blocker reports "no data".
How to get the key:
- Sign up for a free account on
finnhub.io (email verification).
- After login the API Key is displayed at the top of the
dashboard.
- The free tier is enough: 60 requests per minute. WheelTrading
spreads calls across the symbols in use.
Paste the key 1:1 into Settings ▸ Global settings ▸ Finnhub API key.
DeepL (optional)
What for: automatically translates English market news into German if your UI language is set to de. Without DeepL you see the original English news - still fully usable, just less convenient.
How to get the key:
- On deepl.com/pro-api pick the
DeepL API Free plan (free, 500,000 chars/month).
- Register (email + credit card for verification, no charges on the
free plan).
- In the account area copy the key from Account ▸ Auth key.
- Free keys end in
:fx- that's correct and recognised by WT.
Paste under DeepL API key.
Google Gemini (optional)
What for: enables a short verbal outlook on the company research page in the style of "what does the current data say?". Purely additive - the algorithmic evaluation keeps working without Gemini.
Privacy notice: When you use Gemini, only public stock metrics (symbol, market cap, PE, IV rank, last price) are sent to Google in the US - no account, portfolio or order data. Still an explicit opt-in because of the third-country data transfer.
How to get the key:
- Log in with a Google account on
aistudio.google.com/app/apikey.
- Click Create API key.
- Free tier is generous (dozens of queries per minute).
Paste under Google Gemini API key.
Optionally you can pick a specific model below (e.g. gemini-1.5-flash for fast / cheap queries). Leave empty = server default.
What happens with invalid / expired keys?
- Finnhub: news panels stay empty, earnings blocker reports "no
data". No crash. Log entry in the admin area.
- DeepL: news is shown in the English original.
- Gemini: the verbal outlook is simply missing - the rest of the
research page keeps working.
How to delete?
Every field on the settings page has a Delete button. Clicking it sets the DB value back to NULL and disables the corresponding service immediately.
